As much as we enjoy the extra warmth of the summer sun, sometimes it’s nice to retreat to the cool shade of the woodlands during the hottest months of the year. It certainly makes for a change from the typical seaside summer holiday experience!
Throughout the country, there are some stunning woodlands that make ideal locations for summer holidays in the UK. Under the green tops of the trees, you can enjoy a holiday that’s not too hot, with plenty of respite from the glare of the bright summer sun.
So, let’s take a look at some of the best options for those who want to spend their summer a little more in the shade.
New Forest, Hampshire
One of the largest woodland destinations in the UK is the New Forest in Hampshire, which is a lot older than its name suggests. These woodlands have stood largely untouched since the days of William the Conqueror, protected by royal decree and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
With more than 140 square miles of forest to explore, there’s no shortage of shady spots for visitors to escape the summer heat. The New Forest isn’t just woodlands, with heathlands and grassy meadows also to be found within the bounds of the forest.
There are plenty of trails beneath the trees to wander during the hotter parts of the summer, as well as chances to spot some of the many wild ponies and other wildlife that call the New Forest their home.
Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire
Possibly the most famous woodland in the UK, Sherwood Forest is steeped in both history and legend. The legendary home of Robin Hood and his band of merry men is now a popular destination for those who want to enjoy some time in the great outdoors.
The forest’s towering oak trees, winding pathways and hidden glades all feel a step away from the modern world, helping visitors to enjoy some tranquillity. You can also spend your time in the forest learning more about its fascinating history and folklore, or perhaps even trying your hands at some archery.
Snowdonia National Park, Wales
This one isn’t just a forest, as Snowdonia National Park is better known for its mountains. But while the area is home to one of the tallest peaks in the entirety of the UK, the national park also features some incredible woodlands.
The Welsh forests are full of shade and offer plenty of beautiful spots to stop and take in the natural wonders. Even if you aren’t interested in tackling the mountain trails, there are still many walking routes that wind through the valleys and woodlands.
The Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
A slightly smaller scale than some of the other notable UK woodlands, the Forest of Dean is still a veritable haven for anyone who wants to enjoy some nature on their summer holidays. Covering over 42 square miles, the forest has a wealth of activities on offer for visitors to enjoy, from hiking and mountain biking to forest bathing and wildlife watching.
There’s a reason that the Forest of Dean has been the filming location for more than a few TV series and films. You could even see if you recognise any parts of it from the screen! In the shade beneath the trees there are rivers, hidden valleys and ancient ruins, all just waiting to be explored.
