Well here we are. After 10 years of birthday interview questions and quizzing my sons every year, we’ve come to the big one. The grand finale. Today, Ezra turns 18. I can’t even describe how I’m feeling. A mix of pride, surprise, joy, WTFkery (yes this is grammatical) and pure, unending love.
It’s bittersweet watching your child grow from the toddler who once insisted on being called Batboy to the 6-footer who alternately refers to me as Bro, Bruv, Muv or Lil Mo. You want your kids to rise and bloom and stretch beyond your wildest dreams but oh… it’s so hard to let go. With A-levels in a few months and multiple uni offers in the bag, it’s likely he’ll be leaving home before the end of the year. I’m not ready. Then again, I wasn’t ready all those years ago when I found out we were having a baby… or even when they placed him in my arms for the first time. It’s been an incredible adventure so far and I’m looking forward to our next chapters. Ready or not, here we go.
Ezra and I have decided this will be his last birthday interview, at least for the blog. Left to me, I’d carry on until he was in his 40s! Maybe he’ll keep the tradition going when he has kids of his own. I hope so.
I’ve loved asking and sharing these 20 questions as our annual family tradition. I especially enjoy comparing how his answers change and what stays the same (hint: Crunchy Nut). Read on.
