Music in the air, wonder in their eyes, and a big fat smile on all your faces. It’s that festival feeling I’ve been rhapsodising about on Babes about Town of late. Now you can capture some of that spirit right here in London. Just head to brand new Wild Child Festival* in Dulwich on August 17 to 19.
Wild Child Festival: Where the Wild Things Are
Wild Child Festival is a gathering of adventurous spirits in south London. Kids ages 0 to 11 and their families are invited to go wild with their imaginations. I love the intimate and non-commercial ethos of this event. The festival will admit only 500 people daily, keeping crowds and queues to a manageable size.
Once you’ve bought your ticket, there are NO hidden costs. So you won’t find yourself shafted later just for someone to paint a butterfly on your child’s cheek! Also there are no big name bands or characters off the telly — yet there’s creativity and inspiration around every corner.
11 Creative Zones
Whether that’s frolicking in the Unicorn Meadow, flying on a trapeze, doing water pistol painting, having a go at creative coding, or dancing your socks off in the Bop Along Ballroom. The festival features 11 different zones, ranging from the Wordy Wood (authors and storytelling with Little Folk Tales) to the Wellness Warren, where families can practise yoga and mindfulness with Seedlings Wellbeing.
You’ll be cracking up in the Giggly Grove with comedy for kids and their grownups; be amazed in the Magic Hollow with El Baldiniho; or pick up a circus trick or two in the Little Top.
Groove away in the Harmony Hideaway, where BeBop Baby and Nostalgia 77 will be spinning a mix of soul, rock and roll, rare groove and funk, and Afrobeat. Mama Codes will lead coding workshops in the Imagination Lab, and the Crafty Den is crammed with arts and crafts to keep little hands busy.
The tiniest festival-goers get their very own zone, Babes in the Burrow. Here you and your bubba can enjoy interactive performances from the likes of Baby Broadway; explore the magical sensory garden, and indulge in edible messy play with Grubby Bubs.
A Wild Day Out
London mum and family arts producer Hayley Byfield (below left) is the Chief Wild Child behind this brilliant new festival. She has more than 20 years experience in children’s arts, including Just So Festival, Three Wishes and Winterville, as well as at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Hayley has always dreamed of striking out with something bigger, yet still family-focused. And she has huge plans for the Wild Child brand going forwards (north London, look out).
If you fancy a fun-packed day out with your family, that won’t cost the earth, Wild Child is the place to be. There’s no camping either, so your kids can be tucked up in their beds by sundown, bursting with happy memories.
Wild Child Festival is daily on Friday Aug 17, Saturday Aug 18 & Sunday Aug 19 at the Trevor Bailey Sports Ground, Dulwich, South Circular Road, SE21 7LE (West Dulwich rail/by car, just off the South Circular Rd (A205)). Advanced booking only. Early bird Tier 1 tickets are still available at £24 per person. Toddler tickets (under 3s) are just £5 and babes in arms (ages 18 months and under) go FREE but require a ticket for entry. Visit the FESTIVAL WEBSITE for more info and bookings!
