Howzat! The boys were invited** to their first ever cricket lessons at the historic ‘home of cricket’ this summer.
Lord’s MCC Cricket Academy offers cricket courses for kids, from ages 3 to 17, throughout the year in holiday or weekly term time sessions.
There are three levels for younger children: Future Stars (ages 8 to 10), Cricket Cubs (ages 5 to 7) and Little Legends (ages 3 to 4). Ezra’s 8 but since that session plays with hard balls, and it was his first time, he decided to stick with his brother in the Cricket Cubs.
The two-day summer holiday cricket course (2-5pm) started with fun warm-up sessions each day that included running between stumps and attempting to catch balls while leaping onto a mat. Then the boys were split into groups for bowling and batting practice and each day rounded up with a mini cricket match.
The three instructors quickly put the boys at ease, cracking jokes, encouraging them and passing on their love for the game. Ezra and Jed had a brilliant time and both came away with a sense of achievement and a desire to play more cricket.
For my part, it was fun to watch from the sidelines but since the sessions are three hours long, I was pleased that you could also grab a tea or coffee and a slice of cake from the on-site cafe. There’s free cloud wifi, so I could browse on my iPad while keeping an eye on things from the viewing platform upstairs.
I don’t know loads about cricket but it’s exciting to come to Lord’s, take a sneak peek at the pitch and imagine some of the legendary matches that have taken place here.
We’re looking forward to watching a live cricket match at Lord’s next month and I know the babes will be bursting to tell you all about it!
