There was much anticipation at Babes HQ about the opening of Emil and the Detectives live at the National Theatre. Abiye had been reading the book with Ezra and they were keen to see how it would translate to the stage.
On opening night, I’d been invited to see the Hackney Empire panto, so Abiye took Ezra off to the South Bank to do a father and son review. Here’s what they thought:
Ezra Cole, 7 years old
I thought it was one of the best shows I have ever seen and I have actually seen quite a lot. I would recommend anybody to go and see it, because of all the action and the adventure. There were some quite big changes from the book but most of them made the story even more exciting. The chase scenes were really amazing.
I really liked the expression in the actors’ voices too and loved the way the stage moved and changed. I liked they surprised the audience in the end.
Abiye, 45 and a half years old
When I was offered the opportunity to take my son Ezra to see Emil and The Detectives at the National Theatre I was excited, yet a little hesitant at the same time.
It was one of my favourite books when I was his age, and we had recently read it together. I was worried the adaptation would be too jarring and I didn’t want my treasured memories tarnished.
At first these concerns prevented me from really getting immersed in the action, but before long I was swept away by this amazing production.
The set was the best I have ever seen, the lighting and music were wonderful and really conjured up Berlin all those years ago.
There is a subtle yet, strong political flavour which I think was very appropriate for the times we are living in and very positive also.
They have done this wonderful book proud. It was a great evening out.
Emil and the Detectives is at the National Theatre, SE1 (Waterloo/Embankment tube). Recommended for ages 7+. £12-£50/half-price tickets over £24 for under 18s (until Feb 20)
