Our pick of top events for London families this weekend, including art fairs, baby show, kids’ theatre and freaky fun in Whitechapel Gallery. For a darker twist, visit our Halloween Special.

Thu-Sun: Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, Lower Fairground Site, East Heath Rd, NW3 (Hampstead Tube)
North London’s counterpart to its big sister in Battersea launches with a host of collectors’ bargains, food stalls and fun activities for all the family including workshops with Cass Arts and spooky Halloween face painting (Sat, 2-3pm & 4-6pm), plus a free creche. 11am-5.30pm (Thu), 11am-6pm (Fri-Sun); £10 adv/£12 door (weekday) or £12 adv/£15 door (weekend), under 12s FREE (Oct 27-30)

Fri-Sun: The Baby Show, Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre, Warwick Rd, SW5 (Earl’s Court tube)
Everything you need to pimp your nursery. Best for bumps to toddlers. 9.30am-5.30pm; adult £13.50 adv/£20 door, under 16s FREE (Oct 28-30)

Sat: The Great Whitechapel Artchaeological Dig (pictured) at Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 High St, E1 (Aldgate East tube)
Uncover what lies beneath with quirky collective the House of Fairytales as you burrow through tunnels and complete mind-bending tasks with a species from the 15th dimension. Beard-making and robot prototyping workshops on offer. 12-4pm, FREE (Oct 29)

Sun: The Snow Dragon at The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, SE8 (Deptford rail, 6 mins from London Bridge)
Go on a weird and wonderful journey with Billy the kid, a young goat who wanders into the wild woods where wolves lurk and the mysterious Snow Dragon is never far away. Brought to you by the same crew behind The Gruffalo. For ages 3+. 3pm, £6/family £22 (Oct 30)
