Pregnancy is a time of possibility and creativity. For some mothers, this entails sprawling out on the sofa rubbing your belly and fantasizing about the future with your bubba.
Other mamas get to work.
Designer Eva Sonaike started her business while on maternity leave. A fashion journalist, she had always been into interiors and when she got preggers decided to do up her nursery. Bored of the plain, Disney-fied stuff she found in traditional maternity stores, Eva decided to make her own stuff using African fabrics reflecting her Nigerian heritage.
Today Eva Sonaike’s range of cushions and accessories can be found in upscale boutiques and department stores like Liberty and Selfridges. Her designs are being sought after by hotels from Athens to Ibiza.
She’s now launching a children’s line, Lolu Lola named after her son Lolu (aged 2 and a half) and daughter Lola (8 months). The collection features a baby quilt, a toy bag and a cushion adorned in birds, butterflies and African symbols and English gingham backing.
What I love about Eva is not just that she’s a mumpreneur extraordinaire and a sister from my homeland, but that her products are so unique. These materials will jazz up any nursery and the brightly coloured patterns will certainly capture your little one’s imagination.
