We were at the Thames Festival on Sunday, after a morning spent browsing (and munching) at New Covent Garden Market. It had been a weird day, swinging between chilly and baking hot.
But by the time we reached the Freedom Stage on the Southbank Centre’s green space, it had turned into the perfect late summer afternoon.
We caught the end of UK hip hop artist TY’s set and when he played the old-school anthem ‘Jump Around’, the babes got leaping.
The Thames Festival is London’s largest outdoor festival and an annual bash to celebrate the end of summer. The party happens all alongside the River Thames, from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge and beyond.
It’s very family-friendly with loads of activities and attractions over two days, although the sheer scale of it can be overwhelming. One lady at the Southbank info booth said they’d given out their entire stock of 40,000 festival leaflets within the first hour!
Aside from boogying on the grass to live bands, we enjoyed sampling some street food, watching participants get knocked about in the Spots vs Stripes sports event, trying our hands at Korean games and a wide mix of street art and performance.
We wanted to hang out for the Night Carnival but managed to miss the procession going by and I decided it was too late to stay up for the Fireworks Finale (Ezra had school the next day).
The Southbank is one of our favourite spots in the capital to hang out and the Thames Festival is a major draw for that area. Next year, we’ll plan to make a full weekend of it.
