There’s always something thrilling about live sports, even when you’re a bit clueless about the game. We had front row seats at the Royal London Cup One Day Finals at Lord’s cricket grounds, and I was glued to the action, even though the scoreboard might as well have been written in Greek.
Luckily the mister arrived and explained to us why Durham was about to beat Warwickshire in the closing match of the summer cricket season. We were happy cheering for both sides and whooping for the winners at the finish.
It was such a fun day out at Lord’s, with a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere that reminded us of the vibe at Saracens Rugby Club. The babes were having a blast.
There was free popcorn and candy floss on offer for all ticket holders, as well as activities for kids like cricket batting, keepy-uppy trials, and fairground stalls.
During the match, it was funny listening to the cricket songs and banter – I’d imagined that cricket fans would be a lot more ‘gentlemanly’ than the footie crowd but they got pretty rowdy at times (although nothing rude)!
The highlights for the boys were seeing Durham do their victory walk around the pitch and getting their first ever sporting autographs from some of the cricketing stars, including Durham captain Mark Stoneman.

Afternoon Tea at Lords
You can take afternoon tea in the Long Room in the Pavilion, overlooking the outfield. There’s a formal dress code (no jeans or trainers), so this might be a perfect excuse to leave the minions at home and enjoy a Date with Dad instead.

Lord’s holds cricket courses for juniors throughout the year. You can read all about the boys’ experience of kids cricket coaching at Lord’s. In short, they loved it!
Tour of Lords
Go on a 100 minute tour of the historic grounds in the company of an expert guide.

For serious cricket fans, you can explore cricketing history and gawp at artefacts such as the original Ashes urn.

I’m so glad there are still some people left in the world who enjoy cricket. I love the game but I guess that’s because I grew up with non-stop cricket at home. Even played for a while every evening with my neighbourhood friends. That tea at Lords sounds good – must try it sometime.
