When I learned that Vicki Psarias-Broadbent (better known to the world as superstar influencer and broadcaster Honest Mum) was writing a book on Greek Myths, I was giddy with anticipation. Vicki is a natural born storyteller, a former film director and screenwriter who has built her blog into a digital sensation.
Vicki is fiercely proud of her Greek Cypriot heritage and her dad (chef and restaurateur Papa G) can often be found Greek dancing on TikTok with his gorgeous granddaughter Florence. Opa!
Following the success of her first book Mumboss, Scholastic approached Vicki to write her debut children’s book, part of their Folktales & Legends series. It turned out to be a match made in Mount Olympus.

I adore reading myths and origin stories and as a kid I would have inhaled this book in one go. Vicki brings these classics to life in cinematic style. Greek Myths is a brilliantly written introduction to some of the stories that have inspired generations.
Many of the big names feature e.g. Zeus, Medusa, Heracles (aka Hercules), King Midas. I also enjoyed learning more about the lesser known gods, demigods and mortals who make up these often wild and absorbing mini-sagas.
My favourite chapters include the hot romance between Eros and Psyche, and the tale of Atalanta, the strong and fiery warrior. The author dedicates the book to her three children whom she describes as Heracles, Pegasus and Atalanta — such a sweet touch.

Vicki has infused these tales with a modern twist that makes them feel fresh and vivid. I especially like the lessons at the end of each chapter, where she reflects on values like courage, fairness and resilience.
One that struck a chord was when she likens Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun, to our relentless pursuit of AI and other powerful technologies. How far are humans willing to go to serve our own ambition and what (and who) is being left behind?
Greek Myths is aimed at kids but it offers food for thought, no matter your age. And if you’re a grownup who enjoys series like the TV show Kaos, this book should tickle your Achilles heel too.
