Whether you’re heading to the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands or the cultural vibrancy of cities like Bath and York, a road trip allows you to see the UK in a way that no other mode of travel can offer. But before you set off, a little planning can go a long way to ensure your trip is smooth, enjoyable and stress-free.

Create the perfect setup

It’s important to create a comfortable and enjoyable environment inside the vehicle when hitting the road with friends or family. Make sure everyone has enough legroom and that you’ve got enough space for everyone’s luggage. Also, think about the seating arrangement and different entertainment options.

Consider the car insurance you have in place and take time to understand your coverage. If you’re travelling with more than one vehicle, it’s worth looking into multi car insurance. This way, you can ensure all vehicles are covered under one policy, saving money and reducing the hassle of managing multiple policies.

If you decide to rent a car for the trip, check whether or not it’s equipped with features such as air conditioning and GPS. Features like this help prevent unnecessary frustrations and can help to keep the vibe positive.

Map out the route

Road trips need to be carefully thought out and planned. You could start by researching potential routes and scenic stops or points of interest along the way. Take some time to look for hidden gems that might not show up on the usual tourist guides.

Use reliable navigation apps to plot your journey, but add a little extra time for last-minute detours or stops. It’s important to give yourself flexibility in case you find something unexpected and exciting.

Make sure all vehicles are road-trip ready

Before you set off, ensure that your vehicle is road-trip ready.

Check the tyres, oil levels and brake pads, and make sure the windscreen wipers and lights are all functioning well, especially if you’ll be driving in unpredictable weather. A car breakdown can easily ruin the trip, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you’re driving multiple cars, ask each driver to do a quick check on their own vehicle. Keep an emergency kit in each car, complete with essentials like a first-aid kit, spare tyre, jack and jumper cables.

If you are driving for long periods you can experience tiredness. It is essential you stop when you feel tired and take a well deserved rest. The last thing you want to happen while you are away is to be involved in an accident. However, if you are involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault then you could be entitled to compensation. Speak with accident lawyers to see where you stand with getting help and assistance.

Stock up on essentials

Before hitting the road, make sure you’ve packed all the essentials. Think about items like chargers, travel pillows, playlists and books or games to keep everyone entertained. Stock up on snacks for the journey, but also plan for meal stops along the way to enjoy local flavours and experience regional cuisine.

If you’re relying on a phone or tablet for directions, or even entertainment, don’t forget a car charger or a portable power bank for your phone or tablet. A road trip can be long and tiring for everyone, so try to keep a positive atmosphere by thinking ahead and staying prepared.
