Now that summer’s on its way out it’ll be time for Christmas before you know it. So, if you’re thinking of heading somewhere else in the UK for your Christmas holidays then now is the time to get sorting it.
But if you’re not already decided on a location, where are the best places in the UK for Christmas breaks this year? Well, that’s the question we’re here to answer today. No matter what type of getaway it is that you’re looking for, from coastal retreats to city breaks, somewhere in the UK has you covered!
- Chester
Starting off with a less common pick, Chester is a lovely city in northwest England that is steeped in history. The cobbled streets, medieval architecture and iconic Roman city walls all provide a great backdrop for Christmas celebrations, especially when lit up with an array of twinkling lights.
One of the essential stops is the city’s Christmas market, which you can find near the imposing Chester Cathedral and includes a cosy selection of stalls offering festive food, drinks and local crafts. But that’s not the only festivity to visit, as Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo sees the park lit up with an incredible illuminated trail of life-sized animal lanterns and festive scenes for all the family to enjoy.
2. Norwich
Sat in the heart of East Anglia, Norwich transforms into a Christmas wonderland during the winter months. Its winding streets and beautiful historic buildings are draped in festive lights that help to create an almost magical atmosphere as you wander the city, especially during December evenings.
Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or mulled cider as you take in the sights and browse the stalls at the local Christmas market, with its many opportunities for unique Christmas presents to fill stockings or simply go under the tree.
A particular highlight is the Tunnel of Light, an impressive light installation that features thousands of LED lights – perfect for a Christmas card snap! For more traditional Christmas events there’s a range of carol concerts in the cathedral and theatre performances at the Norwich Theatre Royal to enjoy.
3. Falmouth
If you want something a little different for your next Christmas holiday then consider heading down to Cornwall’s south coast and the charming town of Falmouth. With its picturesque harbour, long maritime history and thriving arts scenes, there’s something for everyone in this south coast town.
Like many other towns up and down the country, Falmouth is decked out in festive lights and decorations during December and hosts its own Christmas market. If you’re looking for some particularly Cornish presents to gift to your family then there’s no better place to look.
For another uniquely Cornish twist on festivities, you could be treated to some sea shanties alongside the more common Christmas carol singing. Not to mention the particularly lovely contrast of coming in from a long seaside stroll to enjoy a warm drink in one of the town’s cosy pubs.
4. Llandudno
Another option if you’re considering a Christmas break by the seaside is the Welsh town of Llandudno. Referred to as the ‘Queen of Welsh Resorts’, this town has buckets of charm and Victorian character to offer visitors, and is easily accessible from major cities like Liverpool and Manchester.
Its wide seaside promenade, grand hotels and various Victorian buildings all provide an idyllic setting for your Christmas getaway.
The town’s Victorian Extravaganza is a special draw, with the town’s streets filling with traditional fairground rides, entertainers and costumed characters dressed in Victorian garb. Anyone looking for a more historical-feeling season will enjoy some time in Llandudno over the Christmas holidays.

Of course, that’s hardly an extensive list of Christmas holiday destinations for you to choose from. From the seaside to historic city centres, there’s no shortage of lovely locations for a Christmas break throughout the UK.
