Villa Pia day trips: eating gelato in Siena

**Guest post

Italy is a mecca for teens, especially because of the mix of ancient history sites and a plethora of eateries offering some of the best pizzas in the world, followed by exquisite rainbow-coloured gelato.

Any teens keen on arts and culture will love to explore the magnificent cultural sites. They can learn about the tragedy which befell Pompeii or gaze at the shining mosaics in Venice’s Basilica di San Marco.

Here are some of the best things to do in Italy with teens:

Ride a gondola in Venice

There is no doubt that Venice, Italy’s northern city of canals is one of Europe’s most beautiful places on a cruise to the Mediterranean and a floating jewel among the country’s dynamic cities.

A gondola ride on the canal waters is the most quintessential activity to experience in this “city of bridges” apart from the scenic narrow streets leading to the iconic St Mark’s Square and the top sights surrounding it.

Venice is a magical place with a dreamy atmosphere which is sure to win the heart and ignite the imagination of any teenager who sets foot on it.

Go hiking on the Dolomites

For teens and young adults, especially those who love the outdoors, the Dolomites are a great mountain area to visit. The region has scores of hiking paths, suitable for all ages. In nearby Cortina, there is also an Olympic ice skating rink.

For relaxation, the area has spa venues and boat rides on the lakes, while those kids who don’t want to do too much trekking can opt for a cable car ride to see some stunning views from above.

Go on a food tour

Italy’s culinary scene is highly regional, so for the avid teen food lover it’s worth going on a food tour to taste what each location has to offer. Food tours with teens also open up opportunities to meet other like-minded people and spend time together.

A traditional dish, like the UNESCO heritage Pizza Napoletana needs no introduction and is a must try. In Italy, food tours are usually followed by wine tasting trips in a local winery (remember though that the legal drinking age is 18).

Explore ancient cities

No trip to Italy with teens is complete without a visit to some of the classic historical sites. There are many sites of archaeological importance in Italy, some that have much appeal for even the surliest teenagers.

Sites that should be on every teenager’s list include the Colosseum Archaeological Park and Pompeii. Further in the south of Italy, the Valley of the Temples as well as Paestum.

Visit James Bond’s Matera

And of course, Matera is a perennial favourite with teens as it is the location of a James Bond movie set and highly recommended to add to your itinerary. The town is beautiful, safe and unique and it might turn out to be the highlight of your teenager’s Italian escape.
