Sing Hallelujah for Impact Theatre’s bold production of the hit movie, supporting The Amy Winehouse Foundation. Hurry, there’s just a few tickets left for this adaptation of Joan Aiken’s classic book. Discover a world of magic, mayhem and moonlit adventures. Head to Greenwich for this exclusive early morning show, inviting children with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) plus their families and carers along for an out of this world experience. Bookworms large and small converge in Barnes for the annual festival of kiddy lit. See big names like Children’s Laureate Lauren Child, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Ade Edmondson, Matthew Syed, Francesca Simon and many more. There will be sessions with Aardman Animations, author and illustrator talks, signings and workshops, along with live theatre and pop-up performances. Here’s something a little bit different, and by little we mean tiny dogs. At the Pug Cafe, they celebrate small dogs like dachshunds, pugs and this weekend it’s the Pomeranian that takes centre stage. The pop-up Pomeranian Cafe is a one-off event in association with Universal Pictures to promote the release of The Secret Life of Pets 2. It’s a select gathering for poms and pom-lovers, where your furry friends will get the star treatment. Prepare for A Party Like No Other, as the multiple award-winning family ravers head back to iconic nightclub Fabric, for only their second time ever. Hey fly girl, it’s that time of year again. Join the Common People in Streatham for the annual Kite Day. The weather seems about right for a breezy day of kite-flying fun, with street food on offer, face painting, bouncy castle and more. Bring your own kites or buy one at the site, and look out for master moves from professional flying crews. All ages. 11am-5pm, FREE (May 12)
Sun: Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival, St Paul’s Church Garden, Bedford St, WC2E 9ED (Covent Garden tube)
Punch and Judy professors from around the world gather in the garden of St Paul’s Church (aka the Actors’ Church) for this annual celebration of puppets, ribald comedy and family fun. The garden is where Mr Punch first appeared in England way back in May 1662 (featuring Samuel Pepys). Celebrate this uniquely British tradition with brass band procession (from 11am), Punch & Judy shows, maypole dancing, folk music and puppet workshops. Who’s up for a barnstorming afternoon at Cecil Sharp House? The annual May in a Day family folk arts festival is a celebration to welcome the spring, and it should certainly put a spring in your step. Come for ceilidh, maypole dancing, even clog dancing to keep you on your toes.
