A literary feast for young and old

March 3, 2010 //  by Uju//  Leave a Comment

It’s World Book Day on Thursday and Discover, the story-making centre in Stratford, E15 is kicking things off with its annual family lit fest, The Big Write.

Over four days, bookworms young and old can take part in a series of lectures and readings with best-selling kids’ authors and illustrators including Emma Chichester Clarke and Axel Scheffler (illustrator of The Gruffalo).

If you’ve ever fancied writing or illustrating a children’s book, make sure to attend one of the Big Write or the Big Picture talks featuring top authors, illustrators, agents and editors.

Rugrats get a chance to meet Maisy Mouse as she celebrates her 20th birthday (don’t tell anyone how old she really is!) in a special party. Or groove on with Gerald the giraffe in the special event for Giraffes Can’t Dance.

And as ever, the popular Boogie Babies session offers songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers.

If you’ve never been to Discover, it’s a lovely arts space that makes a fabulous day out for little ones up to age 11. Last time I went with a mix of kids aged 2 to 10 and they all had a blast.

Ezra especially enjoyed climbing in and out of tunnels, jumping on coloured lights in the Polka Dot Sounds room and making spoon puppets.

Other fun activities include flying the Lollipopter, crossing the Sparkly River, hunting for treasure in the Secret Caves and sliding down the giant monster tongue in the playground outside.

The centre will be closed for refurbishment from March 8 to April 9.
