Mirror Mirror: Snow White with Girl Power! (DVD Review)

August 5, 2012 //  by Uju//  Leave a Comment

We were treated to a special screening* to promote the DVD release of Mirror Mirror, complete with kids’ activities, balloons and amazing looking cupcakes shaped like apples.

The film itself was great. Mirror Mirror is Snow White remixed, with our feisty heroine (the aptly named Lily Collins) turning the legendary lovely into an action chick to rival Rapunzel in Tangled.

Julia Roberts is the evil step queen — I’ve always thought Hollywood’s original golden girl plays mean especially well, despite her winning smile. She’s deliciously wicked as the uber cougar stalking the handsome but slightly thick Prince (Armie Hammer from The Social Network), not for his love but for his money.

The basic premise is the same — Snow White is left to die in the forest but hooks up with a band of dwarves (proper rebels, not a Dopey one in sight), fights back against black magic and of course true love conquers all.

Mirror Mirror is a thoroughly entertaining family romp, I was totally swept up in the lavish sets and scenery, and there were times when I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s definitely PG as there are some dark moments and a beast lurking in the forest, so Jed spent half the movie on my lap.

But both boys loved it and I think girls especially would adore this film with its dashing hero, chick power (both good and bad!) and gorgeous costumes. One for the home library!

Mirror Mirror is out now on DVD and Blu Ray
