Babes Away: Camp Bestival

July 13, 2010 //  by Uju//  2 Comments

Bestival’s sister act, Camp Bestival in Dorset is one of a growing number of summer music festivals designed to appeal to family members of all ages.

Babe about town Avi Esther went not only with a kid in hand, but one in the oven!

Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

How old were your children when you went to Camp Bestival?
I was 7 months pregnant with a 2 (almost 3) year old.

Who was on the line-up?
I don’t remember, but there was this wonderful Brazilian band that was very funny.

Did you go in a big group?
I went with a group of friends, one of which had two children of her own, aged 5 and 3.

What kind of preparations did you make beforehand?
We got a tent and some food and clothes together… and the various other things one needs when camping.

What gear/baby items would you say were essential for the event?
A push chair. Big juice/water cup and a comforter. My children have blankies, some others have dummies etc.

Camp Bestival is meant to be the most family-friendly of festivals, would you agree?
I’ve not been to other festivals yet, but it was very family-friendly.

How did the kids cope with crowds/noise levels?
A bit overwhelmed, but when we were dancing together they had a blast. They just needed us to stay close.

What was your favourite part of the festival?
It would have to be hanging out with our friends and dancing to music.

What was the biggest challenge?
Sleeping or not sleeping… the person who camped next to us who talked the whole night and next morning. The toilets… I opted for the woods most of the time.

Anything you would have liked to change, looking back?
A better air mattress that kept the air inside and earplugs.

Are you planning any more festivals with the kids?
Yes, I am going to the Field of Love summer festival in August. It’s a dance festival that has a great community vibe and great music.

What tips do you have for other parents planning a festival trip?
Lots of baby wipes, ear plugs, toilet paper and coffee for the morning. Individual long life milk cartons for the evening bottle… milk does not keep well out of a fridge. Make sure you are supported whether it’s your partner or friends, it could be very hard without helping hands.

Camp Bestival is at Lulworth Castle Dorset on July 30/31-Aug 1, 2010
